Wörthersee is the first Volkswagen GTI meetup in the world. It will start in a few days in a mall town in Austria. It’s an event that’s been embraced by Volkswagen as much as its fans. This kind o events usually bring us some pretty nice concept cars like a Porsche-powered VW Type 2 or the bonkers mid-engine VW GTI W12.
This year is the turn of the new VW Golf GTI TCR Prototype, a near-production ready hot hatch which will go into production this fall. Its name comes from the GTI TCR race car. The production version is going to be powered by turbocharged inline-four making 286 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. This is only six horsepower short of the VW Golf R. This power is sent to the wheels through a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission. The car’s top speed is 155 mph, but if the limiter is removed, the top speed can reach 164 mph.
We don’t know yet if the production version will be available in the U.S. It would be nice to see it here, but there might be too much competition with the Golf R.
